
Queen Latifah was created by Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah was the second child born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is popular for her social activistism, acting talents and her ability to rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the title "delicate sensitive" when she was eight years old. Latifah began singing with the choir of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" in the role of Dorothy in the production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah's mother was a catalyst; she was in touch with the school and with the music. Mark James, a local disc jockey, also well-known as D.J., was invited to the event.
